ANXIETY IN THE ENGLISH SPEAKING CLASS OF HOSPITALITY STUDENTS FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER IN POLITEKNIK INDONUSA SURAKARTA (A CASE STUDY)

Abstract

Teaching and learning English as foreign language is not as easy as mother tongue. Students often feel
uneasy during learning English especially in speaking class. This study aims to explore and describe the
problems that are encountered by the students in learning a foreign language which is known as speaking
anxiety. This research was conducted in the English speaking class of hospitality students for the second
semester in January-April 2015 in Politeknik Indonusa Surakarta. The researcher occupied purposive
sampling in selecting the participants of this study. All the twenty four students of hospitality in second
semester participated for answering the questionnaires. In order to have a deeper understanding of the
students’ foreign language anxiety, some students were picked up as the interviewees based on their
scores in the questionnaires. Moreover, the English teacher was also interviewed. In this study, classroom
observations, questionnaires, interviews, and document collection were occupied as instruments. In
analyzing the data, the interactive model of data analysis proposed by Miles M.B and Huberman A.M
(1984) was occupied. The study showed that; (1) anxiety was faced by a number of students in the
English speaking class, (2) when the student faced speaking test, they were recognized to be the most
anxious, (3) the learners’ characteristics and the classroom procedures became the causes of students
speaking anxiety. In the end, it is necessary for both English teacher and students to be aware that anxiety
problem needs to be solved. The very significant that the result of this study can be consideration in
making more effective syllabus and teaching technique that can add students interest to reduce students
anxiety in Speaking English classroom
